Thirteen people have been confirmed dead and more than 30 others injured after a massive Russian drone and missile attack struck Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, overnight from Wednesday into Thursday.

The attack destroyed several residential buildings and sparked fires in different parts of the city.

Ukrainian military officials said that the death toll includes children, while many others sustained serious injuries. Several of the wounded were taken to hospitals, as search-and-rescue operations continued in the hardest-hit areas.

Videos released after the attack show massive fires burning across several parts of the city, heavily damaged homes and vehicles, and a large crater left by a missile strike in one area of Kyiv.

Emergency responders said at least 34 people were rescued from the rubble of collapsed buildings, while search-and-rescue operations remain ongoing. Other locations, including hospitals and high-rise residential buildings, also suffered extensive damage.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned residents ahead of the attack, urging them to remain alert and seek shelter after intelligence indicated that Russia was preparing to launch a large-scale strike.

For its part, Russia’s Ministry of Defense said the attack targeted Ukraine’s energy and military infrastructure, describing it as a response to recent Ukrainian strikes inside Russia.

The assault is one of the most significant attacks in recent weeks and has further escalated tensions in the prolonged war between the two countries.
