DRC lawmaker Claude Misare has asked the Minister of Defence to explain the whereabouts of more than $4 million reportedly allocated by the government each month to support Wazalendo fighters working alongside the country’s armed forces.

Misare, who represents Uvira Territory in the National Assembly, said that although the money is reportedly released from the state treasury every month, the living conditions of many Wazalendo fighters on the front lines do not indicate that they are receiving the support.

In a letter dated August 17, 2026, addressed to the Minister of Defence, he requested detailed explanations on how the funds are being used and who is responsible for managing them.

He said: “The Wazalendo are living in poverty while sacrificing themselves to defend the country.”

The lawmaker said he has a responsibility to demand that the government account for how funds allocated to the fighters are being used.

The allegations come as some Wazalendo fighters have been accused of setting up roadblocks and demanding money from civilians in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces.

The government-appointed authorities in South Kivu have condemned the roadblocks and unauthorized levies imposed by Wazalendo, saying they disrupt the movement of civilians and commercial activities.
