As eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to face serious security and humanitarian challenges, the DRC government has once again reaffirmed its commitment to implementing agreements aimed at restoring peace and security in conflict-affected areas, particularly in Minembwe and other parts of South Kivu Province.

This was announced following the sixth meeting of the Joint Oversight Committee (JOC) responsible for monitoring the implementation of the peace agreements, held in London this week. The meeting brought together representatives from the DRC, international partners, as well as African mediators and foreign partners who continue to support the peace process in the Great Lakes region.

In the resolutions adopted during the meeting, all parties expressed serious concerns over the renewed escalation of fighting in some areas of eastern Congo, particularly where ongoing conflict activities continue to endanger civilians and undermine the peace dialogue process.

The Minembwe area has continued to be frequently mentioned in discussions related to security in eastern DRC. In recent months, residents there have faced ongoing challenges, including insecurity, displacement, economic disruption, and increasing difficulties in delivering humanitarian assistance.

Participants at the London meeting stressed the need for urgent measures to halt the fighting and facilitate the delivery of emergency assistance to populations affected by the conflict. They also emphasized that lasting peace in Minembwe can only be achieved through dialogue, respect for agreements, and prioritizing the interests of civilians.

In line with international agreements signed last year, the government of President Félix Tshisekedi highlighted ongoing efforts aimed at addressing armed groups that continue to cause insecurity in the country.

DRC representatives stated that the government continues to invest efforts in strengthening security institutions and cooperating with international partners in order to restore stability in all conflict-affected areas.

According to the Kinshasa government, sustainable peace cannot be achieved without ending ongoing military activities that continue to put civilians at risk and hinder development programs.

The Commission stated that one of the urgent priorities is the implementation of a genuine ceasefire that must be respected by all parties. Participants at the meeting called for the suspension of all activities that could further fuel tensions in order to create a conducive environment for continued dialogue.

They also supported the rapid deployment of an expanded team tasked with monitoring compliance with the ceasefire, in order to ensure a reliable mechanism for tracking the implementation of peace resolutions at the regional level.

Beyond security concerns, the meeting also addressed the ongoing humanitarian challenges affecting eastern DRC. Many civilians continue to face food shortages, lack of access to medicines, economic disruption, and the impact of disease outbreaks that remain a serious concern.
Analysts say Minembwe needs an integrated approach that combines security, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic development in order to help residents return to normal life.

The government of President Félix Tshisekedi has reiterated its support for ongoing political dialogue aimed at finding a lasting solution to security challenges in eastern DRC. The Kinshasa authorities affirm that negotiations and international mediation remain among the key pathways to achieving sustainable peace.

As residents of Minembwe and other conflict-affected areas continue to await tangible solutions, many are focusing on the implementation of the resolutions adopted in London, particularly those related to the cessation of hostilities, the protection of civilians, and the restoration of lasting stability.

At present, the situation in Minembwe remains one of the key indicators of whether the peace agenda supported by the DRC government and its partners will succeed in restoring security and development in the country’s eastern region.
