Burundi’s Office of the Prosecutor General has announced that, as part of an investigation into the illegal arms trade, two people — a foreign national and a Burundian — have been arrested, while a large quantity of weapons has also been seized.
In a statement released on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Burundi’s Prosecutor General, Rose Nkorerimana, said that foreign nationals and Burundians are suspected of using forged documents to illegally import or transport weapons through Burundian territory.
Nkorerimana said that a South African national identified as Du Toit Wayne Patrick and a Burundian national identified as Muco Eddie had been arrested as part of the investigation into the alleged offenses.
The Prosecutor General’s Office also announced that it had seized a large quantity of weapons that were being brought into the country illegally. However, it did not disclose the type or exact number of weapons seized.
The statement did not specify where the weapons originated or where they were intended to be taken.
The Prosecutor General said the investigation is still ongoing to establish how the transportation and trafficking of the weapons were organized and to identify all individuals or organizations that may have been involved.
