In the early hours of Friday, June 26, 2026, reports emerged of a major attack allegedly carried out using drones whose origin has not yet been identified. The strike targeted a military position known as “Point Zero,“ a base commonly used by Burundian forces and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC).
According to sources from the area, the attack caused panic and distress among the troops stationed at the base. Reports indicate that several soldiers were killed while others were injured, although the exact number of fatalities and casualties remains unknown at this time.
Residents and observers monitoring developments in the area say the attack triggered significant insecurity, accompanied by loud explosions and confusion inside the targeted military position. However, as of now, neither the Burundian military nor the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) has issued an official statement confirming or explaining the incident.
The reported attack comes just days after another alleged strike earlier this week, which was said to have killed five Burundian soldiers, including an officer holding the rank of Major. That incident was also never officially confirmed or publicly acknowledged by the relevant authorities.
As of now, it remains unclear where the drones originated or who was operating them. However, reports circulating from the area suggest that the attack inflicted significant losses on the forces stationed there.
Point Zero is located near the town of Minembwe, but administratively it falls within Mwenga Territory in South Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The area lies near the boundary between Fizi and Mwenga territories and is in close proximity to the Minembwe center.
The location is known for hosting military positions used by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) and Burundian forces. According to reports, it has also been alleged to serve as a staging area for military operations targeting areas inhabited by the Banyamulenge community, particularly around Gakenke, Kalingi, Gitavi, Lundu, Bidegu, and other surrounding localities.
On the other hand, the MRDP-Twirwaneho movement says it has been repelling these attacks. The group also alleges that drones have been carrying out aerial strikes from the area, causing civilian casualties, killing livestock, destroying homes, and damaging infrastructure, including hospitals and schools.
