The FDLR has reportedly resurfaced in fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after signing an agreement with the government to lay down its arms and undergo demobilization.
The fighting took place in areas of Kalehe Territory in South Kivu Province, including Chambombo, Cyangugu, Kaziba de Rumbishi, Kwisimbi and Gafufura, and began in the early hours of August 11, 2026.
The clashes pitted the AFC/M23 coalition against DRC government forces, alongside the FDLR, Burundian troops, Wazalendo militias operating in South Kivu, and foreign mercenaries. Both sides used small arms and heavy weapons.
AFC/M23 confirmed that civilians were killed and injured in the fighting, while others fled their homes for safer areas.
AFC/M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka said: “The shelling caused civilian deaths and injuries, damaged their property, and forced many families to flee their homes, further worsening the existing humanitarian crisis.”
AFC/M23 also said it had informed the international community that it remained committed to protecting civilians and taking necessary measures to ensure their safety as DRC government forces continued launching attacks in areas under their control.
