Fizi Health Centre, which is controlled by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), was targeted in a drone attack during the night of August 18–19, 2026.
The attack took place at around 1 a.m., when two bombs dropped by a drone struck Mwalu Hotel in the centre, causing its roof to collapse.
There are reports that the hotel was accommodating senior officers from the Congolese and Burundian armies who were working together to prepare new attacks in areas controlled by the AFC/M23 coalition.
The Congolese army says AFC/M23 launched the drone, but the coalition has not yet responded to the allegation.
Residents of Fizi Territory said that at around 8 p.m. on August 18, they saw a drone flying over the centre, raising suspicions that it was surveying the area ahead of the attack.
On August 17 and 18, fighting also broke out in several areas of South Kivu between AFC/M23 and Congolese forces backed by Wazalendo fighters, Burundian troops, the FDLR and mercenaries.
AFC/M23 said the coalition of forces supporting the Congolese government was responsible for attacks in areas under its control, and called on the international community to pay attention to what it described as these provocations.
