Iran accused U.S. President Donald Trump of lying about the Strait of Hormuz after he claimed that Washington had full control of the strait and that ships were passing through it normally.

On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that the United States “has full control of the Strait of Hormuz,” adding, “I think we will keep it.”

Iranian Armed Forces spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaghari described Trump’s claims as “lies and fabrications,” insisting that the strait remains under Iran’s control.

He said claims by the United States that ships are passing through the Strait of Hormuz normally are “lies and rumors.”

Zolfaghari said the Strait of Hormuz is “fully controlled and managed by the Islamic Republic of Iran,” adding that no commercial or oil tanker can pass through the waterway without obtaining permission and being monitored by Iranian forces.

Iran has continued to control the Strait of Hormuz since its war with the United States began on February 28, 2026, with vessels reportedly required to obtain permission and pay fees before passing through.

On Thursday, Hossein Taeb, commander of Iran’s Basij forces, which operate under the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), also said that the Strait of Hormuz remains under Iran’s control.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi likewise said that the United States continues to be mistaken about the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
