The United States has launched fresh strikes on Iranian military positions following an attack in Jordan that left two U.S. soldiers dead and another missing. U.S. officials blamed Iran-backed forces for the assault and vowed to respond, leading to a new wave of military operations targeting what Washington described as Iranian-linked military facilities. The latest escalation has further heightened tensions in the region, raising concerns about the risk of a broader conflict involving the United States and Iran.
For the eighth consecutive day, the United States has carried out strikes against Iran after the two countries’ ceasefire agreement collapsed.
The latest attacks began at around 6:00 p.m. on July 18, 2026, following orders from U.S. President Donald Trump.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation was intended to weaken Iran and retaliate after Iranian forces killed American soldiers.
In a statement, CENTCOM said: “These strikes are intended to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and to deliver a decisive response against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which carried out attacks on U.S. service members in Jordan last night.”
According to CENTCOM, the strikes targeted Iranian military infrastructure, including facilities used for maritime surveillance and coastal defense. The operation also aimed to reduce Iran’s air strike capabilities and damage other military assets.
The attacks were carried out near the city of Sirik in southern Iran and around Shadegan, close to the Iran-Iraq border. Iranian authorities said there were no deaths or injuries and denied that the strikes caused significant damage.
In response, Iran’s military announced that it had launched retaliatory drone attacks against U.S. military installations at Al-Adiri and Ali Al Salem bases in Kuwait.
The attack launched by Iran in Jordan on July 17, 2026, involved ballistic missiles and drones, killing two U.S. soldiers, while another remains missing.
The incident has brought the total number of U.S. military personnel killed in the conflict with Iran to 16, while more than 420 others have been wounded.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth wrote on X that the attack had only strengthened America’s resolve to continue its military campaign.
The latest escalation has intensified accusations from both sides that the other violated the agreed ceasefire, with each seeking retaliation. This has heightened concerns that the conflict could escalate even further, potentially expanding beyond its current scope.
