China’s AI company Moonshot AI has unveiled Kimi K3, a new artificial intelligence model that it claims can compete with leading U.S. technology companies. The launch highlights China’s growing ambitions in the global AI race.
Kimi K3 has 2.8 trillion parameters, which are measurements that indicate the size and capability of an artificial intelligence system in processing information and performing various tasks with limited human supervision.
The full capabilities of Kimi K3, including coding, knowledge-based tasks, reasoning, and decision-making, will become clearer when it is released as open-source technology for everyone on July 27.
This step shows that China continues to seek direct competition with the United States in technology, while also changing the long-standing perception that Chinese companies are behind American companies in the field of artificial intelligence.
Kimi K3 will become the first AI model in the world at this level to be available for use and modification by investors and software developers around the globe.
This comes at a time when the global technology sector is facing a critical period, following the recent decision by the United States government to temporarily order the company Anthropic to suspend the use of its Fable and Mythos applications due to serious technology security concerns.
Although the U.S. later lifted those restrictions, the decision showed that the American government considers advanced artificial intelligence technology a key national security asset and is therefore paying close attention to how it is distributed beyond its borders.
However, the emergence of Kimi K3 shows that Chinese companies continue to make progress in developing technological independence, despite the United States tightening measures to restrict their access to certain AI-related resources.
Moonshot AI, which is strongly supported by major Chinese technology companies including Alibaba and Tencent, said that Kimi K3 is the most powerful AI model it has developed so far.
Unlike AI systems from companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, which do not allow users to modify how they operate, Kimi K3 will be open to everyone, allowing users to customize and improve it to support advanced reasoning, problem-solving, and software development.
Moonshot AI also stated that Kimi K3 was designed to perform many tasks with minimal human supervision, particularly in software engineering and advanced technology development.
Analyses conducted by independent organizations such as Artificial Analysis and Arena.ai showed that Kimi K3 performs at a similar level to leading American AI models, including OpenAI’s GPT and Anthropic’s Claude.
In benchmark tests, Kimi K3 ranked first in web interface engineering and also outperformed Anthropic’s Fable model in evaluations based on feedback from users who were unaware of which AI system they were testing.
The announcement affected financial markets, with shares of other Chinese AI companies competing with Moonshot AI, including Zhipu and MiniMax, falling by nearly 27% and 16% respectively on the Hong Kong stock market.
