Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni welcomed his grandson, Ruhamya Kainerugaba, into the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) after he completed military training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.
Ruhamya is the son of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces of Uganda.
On August 16, 2026, President Museveni said in a post on X that he was pleased to see his grandson join the wider UPDF family after completing his training at Sandhurst alongside his colleague, Bakyira.
He said: “God has once again blessed me to see one of my grandchildren, Ruhamya, join my wider UPDF family after completing his training at Sandhurst with his colleague Bakyira. Ruhamya, I congratulate you, and Bakyira, I congratulate you too.”
Museveni also urged Uganda’s youth to view military service as an opportunity to build a strong foundation for their lives and thanked the parents of the newly commissioned officers.
Ruhamya Kainerugaba officially completed his training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst during a graduation ceremony held in early August 2026. His father, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, attended the ceremony to witness his son’s graduation.
During the Sovereign’s Parade, Ruhamya was commissioned as an officer alongside Andrew Bakyira of Uganda and other cadets from the United Kingdom and several other countries.
The 44-week course includes intensive training in military leadership, battlefield tactics, weapons handling, military operational planning, values and decision-making under pressure. Graduates return to the armed forces of their respective countries to take up their duties.
Gen. Muhoozi also studied at Sandhurst, where he completed his military training in 2000. Before his son’s graduation ceremony, he shared photos of himself during his own training and compared them with photos of Ruhamya, saying they were “a father and son who went through the same challenges, 27 years apart.”
Ruhamya has now joined the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), where he holds the rank of Second Lieutenant.
