The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed group designated as a terrorist organization by several countries and international bodies, carried out two attacks in Mangina Commune, located in Beni Territory of North Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), killing 14 civilians.
On July 14, 2026, ADF fighters launched an attack on a village in Mangina, killing four civilians. Some victims were shot, while others were killed with machetes and other traditional weapons.
On the evening of July 15, ADF militants struck again, attacking residents of Mangina from the Makukulu and Malipizo areas. They killed 10 more civilians and set fire to several houses and other property, including motorcycles.
Kakule Vunyatsi, a member of civil society in Mangina, said:
“Gunfire was heard again at around 6:00 p.m. Mangina is under attack by the enemy, and we call on the security forces to pursue those responsible wherever they are hiding. The army must strengthen its protection of civilians to put an end to these killings.”
Civil society organizations noted that the reported death toll in Mangina remains provisional and could rise, as some residents are still missing and search efforts are ongoing.
According to reports by the United Nations Group of Experts monitoring the security situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the ADF was among the armed groups responsible for the highest number of civilian deaths in the country, with more than 1,000 civilians killed last year.
The ADF operates in Beni Territory and parts of Lubero Territory in North Kivu Province, as well as in Irumu and Mambasa territories in Ituri Province.
