DR Congo – A prominent armed group commander in Ituri Province, who had declared himself “General Hérode,” was killed during clashes between the fighters under his command and the Congolese army (FARDC).
DR Congo – Kakani Tondabo Édouard, also known as “Hérode,” the leader of the armed group known as the Front Patriotique et Intégrationniste du Congo (FPIC), was killed on Wednesday night during clashes.
On Thursday morning, sporadic gunfire was heard in the Nyankunde area and surrounding locations, where the armed group leader was reportedly killed.
The confrontation between his fighters from the FPIC and government forces is reported to have resulted in the deaths of at least six of his bodyguards, according to various sources.
However, the Congolese army denied engaging in fighting with the FPIC, also known as “Tchini ya Kilima.”
In a statement released on Thursday, July 16, 2026, the FARDC rejected allegations that its soldiers were involved in the events that occurred on Wednesday night, July 15, in Nyankunde.
The body of the fighter known as “Hérode” was transported to a hospital in Bunia.
