Thirteen people were killed in Russian strikes on Kyiv, while another 40 were injured. Ukraine said it is facing a shortage of weapons needed to defend against aerial attacks.
Ukraine’s Prime Minister said the damage included apartment buildings, houses, a children’s hospital and a school. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the shortage of air-defense missiles supplied by Ukraine’s Western allies had contributed to the high number of deaths.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said Ukraine needs more weapons and called on its allies to increase their support.
Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncharenko told the BBC that the country had “no air defense at all” against missile attacks because it lacked enough interceptors.
Zelensky said that until Ukraine receives sufficient air-defense weapons, “Russia will never seriously consider lasting peace.”
Ukraine’s military said none of the missiles launched during the attacks were intercepted. Russia, meanwhile, said it used land-, air- and sea-launched weapons to strike military facilities and weapons storage sites.
Ukraine said Russia used 168 drones and 44 missiles, while its air defenses shot down 146 drones and 39 missiles. The attacks also caused power outages in many buildings across Kyiv.
In Russia, the Defense Ministry said 726 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted and destroyed over various parts of the country. Romania and Poland also reported activating their air-defense measures after the attacks approached their airspace.
